Assessment and treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries with Dr. Sameer Mittal at Suyash Hospital, Raipur. Not every ACL tear needs surgery, so the plan starts with an accurate diagnosis.
ACL Injury
A sudden twist during football, cricket, kabaddi or badminton, or a fall from a two-wheeler, can tear the ACL, the main ligament that keeps the knee stable when you turn or change direction. Many people then notice that the knee “gives way” on stairs or uneven ground.
Dr. Sameer Mittal (MBBS, D.Ortho, DNB Orthopaedics; CMC Reg. No. 3016/2010) evaluates knee ligament injuries and performs arthroscopic ACL reconstruction at Suyash Hospital, Raipur.

Who it is for
Clinical tests, X-rays to rule out a fracture and, when indicated, MRI give the full picture. Other ligaments and the meniscus are checked in the same visit.
First steps
Some partial tears, and people with low demand on the knee, do well with rehabilitation alone. Reconstruction is usually discussed when the knee keeps giving way, when there is an associated meniscus tear that needs repair, or when work or sport requires reliable stability.
The procedure
ACL reconstruction replaces the torn ligament with a graft, commonly taken from the hamstring or patellar tendon; other options are discussed case by case. The surgery is done arthroscopically (keyhole), through small incisions with a camera guiding placement of the graft.
If a meniscus repair is done at the same time, walking and bending rules may change. These details are explained before consent. See also ACL and other ligament services.
Recovery
Rehabilitation is a major part of ACL treatment. Timelines vary with graft healing, meniscus status, muscle recovery and your sport. The outline below is general information, not a fixed calendar.
Rushing back increases the risk of re-injury. More detail is in the ACL recovery timeline article.

Quick answers
No. Some people with low pivoting demands and a stable knee after rehabilitation manage without reconstruction. Repeated instability or high-demand sport often leads to a discussion of surgery plus rehab.
Surgery is often planned once the swelling settles and knee movement returns, unless a locked knee or another urgent problem needs earlier treatment. Your examination decides the timing.
Neither is better for everyone. Each has trade-offs, such as donor-site discomfort and suitability for particular sports. The choice is made individually at consultation.
Cost depends on the graft and fixation implants, any meniscus repair, room category, physiotherapy and your insurance. Cashless treatment may be available depending on your insurer and the hospital’s empanelment. An estimate is shared after assessment.
Return to sport is based on meeting strength and functional criteria, not a fixed date, and usually takes many months. Your surgeon and physiotherapist clear running and contact sport in stages.
