Assessment and arthroscopic (keyhole) treatment of meniscus tears, loose bodies and other knee injuries with Dr. Sameer Mittal at Suyash Hospital, Raipur. The first step is an accurate diagnosis, and not every knee problem needs surgery.
What it is
Knee arthroscopy is keyhole surgery. A thin camera (arthroscope) and small instruments are passed into the knee through two or three small cuts. The surgeon sees the inside of the joint on a screen and treats the problem without opening the knee fully.

When it helps
Causing locking, catching or giving way, especially after a twisting injury.
Fragments of bone or cartilage floating in the joint.
In selected cases.
Such as ACL tears. See ACL surgery.
Patellar instability in selected cases.
When it does not settle with other treatment.
When it does not help
For wear-and-tear knee arthritis, research has shown that arthroscopic washing or trimming of the knee usually gives no more lasting benefit than physiotherapy and medicines. Dr. Mittal will tell you if your knee pain is from arthritis and discuss suitable treatment instead.
For advanced arthritis, see knee replacement.

FAQ
Generally no. For wear-and-tear arthritis without mechanical symptoms, research shows arthroscopic washout or trimming usually does not help more than physiotherapy and medicines. Arthroscopy is mainly used for specific problems such as certain meniscus tears, loose bodies and ligament injuries.
Often yes. An MRI shows the meniscus, ligaments and cartilage and helps decide whether arthroscopy is likely to help. Dr. Mittal will advise after examining your knee.
Knee arthroscopy is usually done under spinal or general anaesthesia. The anaesthetist will discuss the safest option for you.
Where possible and suitable, a torn meniscus is repaired to preserve it. Some tears cannot be repaired and the torn part is trimmed. The choice depends on the tear type, location and tissue quality, often confirmed only during the arthroscopy.
It depends on the procedure. After simple trimming, walking usually starts soon with support. After meniscus repair or ligament reconstruction, weight-bearing may be limited for some weeks. You will receive a written plan.
