Knee Replacement Surgeon in Raipur

Consultation and surgical care for knee arthritis with Dr. Sameer Mittal, orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon at Suyash Hospital, Raipur. Every plan starts with a careful diagnosis, and non-surgical options are always discussed first.

Knee Replacement

Is knee pain limiting your walking, sleep or daily work?

Long-standing knee pain from osteoarthritis, an old injury or inflammatory arthritis can make stairs, squatting, floor sitting and even short walks difficult. A structured orthopaedic assessment tells you whether physiotherapy, medicines and lifestyle changes are enough, or whether knee replacement is worth considering.

Dr. Sameer Mittal (MBBS, D.Ortho, DNB Orthopaedics; Chhattisgarh Medical Council Reg. No. 3016/2010) sees patients at Suyash Hospital, Gudhiyari, Raipur, at an evening clinic in Fafadih, and at a visiting clinic in Bilaspur.

Who it is for

When a knee evaluation makes sense

  • Knee pain on walking or climbing stairs that returns soon after rest
  • Morning stiffness, swelling after standing, or pain that wakes you at night
  • Reduced bending, a bowed or knock-knee shape, or a feeling that the knee may give way
  • Difficulty with Indian-style sitting, prayer posture or getting into a vehicle
  • X-ray reports mentioning advanced joint-space narrowing or osteoarthritis

These symptoms have many possible causes. Examination and standing X-rays (with MRI only when needed) help separate problems that settle with therapy from those that may need surgery later.

First steps

Non-surgical options come first

  • Physiotherapy to strengthen the thigh and hip muscles and improve movement
  • Weight management and activity changes to reduce load on the joint
  • Medicines for short periods, when safe with your other health conditions
  • Supports such as a walking stick or knee sleeve, where helpful
  • Injections for selected patients

Knee replacement is usually discussed when pain and loss of function continue despite a fair trial of these measures and imaging shows advanced joint damage. The timing is a shared decision that also considers your health, work and family support.

The procedure

What knee replacement involves

In a total knee replacement, the worn joint surfaces of the thigh bone and shin bone are replaced with metal components and a high-grade plastic bearing. A partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement may suit selected patients whose arthritis is limited to one part of the knee. Which option fits you depends on examination and imaging.

  • Pre-operative tests: blood tests, ECG, medical fitness and anaesthesia review
  • Discussion of implant type and the plan for your knee
  • Surgery under spinal or general anaesthesia, as decided with the anaesthesia team
  • Pain control, early physiotherapy and blood-clot prevention as per hospital protocol
  • Discharge once walking with support and wound care are safe

Dr. Mittal explains the plan, the risks and the alternatives before consent, so you and your family can ask questions. For complex or failed earlier replacements, revision knee replacement is also evaluated.

Recovery

What recovery generally looks like

Recovery is different for every person. Age, bone quality, other illnesses such as diabetes, strength before surgery and regular physiotherapy all affect the timeline. The outline below is general information, not a promise.

  • In hospital: standing and walking with support begin when medically safe
  • First weeks at home: wound care, swelling control, prescribed exercises and gradually longer walks
  • Following months: progressive physiotherapy towards stairs, longer walks and routine daily tasks
  • Driving and work: resumed only after clinical review

As with any major surgery, complications such as infection, blood clots or stiffness can occur. Report fever, calf pain, breathlessness or wound problems promptly. Read the week-by-week knee replacement recovery guide for more detail.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

When is knee replacement considered?

It is usually considered when advanced joint damage causes persistent pain or disability after adequate non-surgical care, and when examination and X-rays support it as a reasonable option. The decision is individual.

Is partial knee replacement an option for me?

Partial replacement may be discussed for selected patients whose arthritis is limited to one compartment of the knee with healthy ligaments. Many people with widespread arthritis need a total knee replacement instead. Only examination and imaging can decide this.

How long is the hospital stay?

It depends on medical fitness, pain control, physiotherapy progress and hospital protocol. You will be given an expected range after the pre-operative assessment.

What does knee replacement cost in Raipur?

Cost depends on the implant, the type of procedure, room category, investigations, physiotherapy and your insurance or TPA rules. Cashless treatment may be available depending on your insurer and the hospital’s empanelment. An estimate is shared after your consultation.

Can I sit cross-legged after knee replacement?

Goals differ from person to person. Some patients regain good bending over time, while others are advised to limit floor sitting to protect the joint. Discuss your lifestyle needs at the consultation.
